Introduction
The 1st Ten Outstanding Chinese Young Persons
in the UK (TOCYP-UK) Selection – THE BIG BEN AWARD is organized
by the British Chinese Youth Federation (BCYF). The objectives
of the selection are:
● to give formal recognition to the Chinese young people who
excel in professional endeavours and contribution to the British
community;
● promoting prominent roles played by the aspiring Chinese young
people in shaping a better future for British society; and
● to provide an incentive to all the promising Chinese young
people who seek further advancement in personal achievement as
well as in British public services.
About BCYF
With more than 500 members from all walks of life in Chinese
community in the UK, British Chinese Youth Federations (BCYF) is
a charity and non-profit making organization dedicated to
developing leadership potentials among young people. British
Chinese Youth Federations (BCYF) represents a network of
highly-motivated and forward-looking Chinese young people who
come together to under a common mission: " to contribute to the
advancement of the British and global community by providing the
opportunity for Chinese young people to develop the leadership
skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship
necessary to create positive change".
Since its establishment, the British Chinese Youth Federations (BCYF)
has proactively responded to challenges in the Chinese community
in the UK, helping to generate awareness on important social and
economic issues which have an impact on our daily lives. The
organization's objectives are carried out through the "Four
Areas of Opportunity", namely Individual; Community;
International; and Business.
● Individual
Through various leadership training programs, members develop
valuable skills such as goal setting, time-management, public
speaking, parliamentary procedures, protocol, etc., thereby
equipping them with necessary techniques to become future
leaders of the community.
● Community
Through various community development programs, members identify
social needs and issues, and develop projects to improve the
well-being of the British community. Awareness and sensitivity
on community problems are thus enhanced.
● International
Through a network of 200000 with All World Chinese Youth
Federation around the world, members gain valuable international
exposure, develop international friendship, and derive awareness
on cross-border, cross-culture issues.
● Business
Members can pursue personal business interests through the BCYF
Business and Finance Chamber as well as worldwide international
networking activities. Each year, various business seminars and
contact sessions are organized by the BCYF Business and Finance
Chamber.

Selections in the UK
Jonsson
Li, MA, MCP, MCSE, MCDBA. Economist and business consultant. He
is the president of British Chinese Youth Federation, the
visiting professor of Renmin (People's) University of China. His
research fields include venture capital, private equity,
sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and UK & China
relationship. He is the author of 'Investing in China', 'City of
London', 'Venture Capital and Private Equity', and 'Tony Blair
(1997-2007)'. There are five investment and business books for
him to be published in 2009.
He is the founder of Big Ben Award, Ten
Outstanding Chinese Young persons Selection in the UK. He is
responsible for the plan, implement, public voting supervising,
and final statistics of the Big Ben Award.

Selection Details
Nomination period for The 1st TOCYP-UK Selection 2009 – THE
BIG BEN AWARD is from 30th January to 1st March 2009. The
nominations shall fall in any one of these categories:
● Commerce and Industry
● Professionals
● Civic and Social Services
● Entertainment / Sports / Culture and Arts
Besides the ten outstanding young persons, the
Selection also set the single prize for the individual and
organization/enterprises.
For Individual: 1) Entrepreneurship, 2) Inventor, 3)
Finance, 4) Culture, 5) Civil Service, 6) Volunteer, 7)
Politician, 8) Music, 9) Film, 10) Sustainability, 11) Science
and Technology, 12) Media, 13) Art, 14) International, 15)
Leadership, 16) All Life Achievement, 17) Special Contribution,
18) Economist, 19) Athlete, 20) Female.
For Organization/Enterprises elected by Chinese young persons
in the UK: 1) Most Influential Chinese/British
Organization/Enterprise, 2) Most Favourite Chinese/British
Organization/Enterprise, 3) Most Influential British Overseas
Chinese Organization/Enterprise, 4) Most Favourite British
Overseas Chinese Organization/Enterprise, 5) Best
Organization/Enterprise for Helping Chinese Young Persons, 6)
Most Favourite British University for Chinese Young Persons, 7)
Most Favourite TV Drams and Episode for Chinese Young Persons,
8) Most Favourite Film for Chinese Young Persons, 9) Most
Favourite Government Department.
ELIGIBILITY OF NOMINEE
The nominee must:
● Be between the age of 18-35 (born between 1 January 1974 and 1
January 1991); and
● Be an Ethnic Chinese;
● Be able to attend or send a representative for the Award Ceremony on May 2009; and
● Be nominated by a proposer.
Note : The eligibility for the nomination is not applicable to
deceased person
PROPOSER
Nominations shall be proposed by individuals who are 18
years of age or above, or by public/private organizations. There
is no limit to the number of nominations to be submitted by each
party. The proposer cannot be the nominee himself / herself.
NOMINATION PROCEDURS AND CONDITIONS
Each nomination must be submitted with:
● Two prescribed nomination forms for proposer in which all the
terms and details must be properly completed, duly signed by
proposer;
● A photocopy of the nominee's passport and visa page;
● Two recent passport size colour photographs of the nominee
with his/her name printed on the back;
● Copies of relevant documents to support the statement made in
the nomination form. Please provide explanatory note with not
more than 300 words (CV) and 1500 words (Personal Statement)
(should be both English and Chinese) attached to each supporting
document.

● Nomination forms should be submitted before 1st March 2009.

● Short-listed nominees MUST attend the interview arranged by
the British Chinese Youth Federation in April 2009.
SELECTION CRITERIA AND PROCESS
The nominee's personal achievements in his/her area of work
or interest and contribution to the community equally constitute
the criteria for consideration in the Selection.
INTERVIEW
All short-listed nominees will be notified and required to
attend an interview by the British Chinese Youth Federation in
April 2009 that allows for a final assessment of the
qualifications and performance of individual nominees with
respect to their areas of work and contribution to society. We
will also open the Mobile-text voting for nominee, which will
account for the 20%-30% of the final scores.
The standard scoring form will provide for the judges. Judges
select 15 nominees from the 30 nominees selected by the Final
Interview. British Chinese Youth Federation will make the order
of every nominee’s total scores and get the final 10.
For the secrecy of judging, the names of the judges will be
published after the confirmation of the birth of TOCYP-UK BIG
BEN AWARD.

binding.】
ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS
Results of the 1st TOCYP-UK Selection 2009 BIG BEN AWARD
will be announced at the Award Ceremony on
9 May 2009. The
awardees and their proposers will invited to attend the Award
Ceremony.
RECOGNITION FOR AWARDEES
● Awardees will be awarded with a BIG BEN AWARD trophy and a
certificate at the Award Ceremony.
● Awardees will be eligible to apply for the membership for The
Outstanding Young Persons Chamber of BCYF.
● The sponsorship except the cost of event will donate to the
BCYF for its charity work.
RECOGNITION FOR SUCCESSFUL PROPOSERS
Proposers of all awardees will receive a souvenir in
recognition of their nominations at the Award Ceremony.
